Renting space for filming How does it work?

On Rep Locations you can post your house, apartment, loft, office, commercial property or farm to be offered to production companies looking for locations for their film shoots, TV series, commercials or photo shoots.

From our website, right on this page, you will be able to register and create an Owner account, which will allow you to register your property on our website. Once inside your owner account, you will be able to publish as many properties as you want and in each of them you will be able to upload up to 10 photos of your house, apartment, loft, office, commercial property or farm. Along with the photos we will ask you for public information about your property, such as zip code and the city where the property is located, and also confidential information such as address and contact details, these confidential data will not be shown on the web, but we need them internally to rent your space.

Once you send us your request, it will be reviewed by our team of editors, to improve texts and classify it according to our criteria, in addition, it is possible that we will ask you for more photos, to enrich as much as possible the file of your location, so that your property is more appealing and get more rentals.

Event rentals, yes, we do that too!

Ah, we are also dedicated to corporate event rentals, so if you consider that your property can host a corporate event, such as a product presentation, an employee meeting, or a small catering, you can also upload your space and label it for this type of rentals, we currently have many houses that are labeled with the tag “rent a house for events” so go ahead and get some extra money with these rentals.

How long does a shoot or photo session last?

Film and television series shoots usually last between one and six working days. Although shooting time is very relative. And a day can last about 12 hours of work. In addition to the actual shooting days, the production company may need extra days of assembly and disassembly of the equipment needed to shoot.

In the case of photo shoots, the times are usually very different, as the work can be done in a day or even half a day.

In any case, the cost per extra hour of recording/use of the space is always included in the contract, as sometimes shoots take longer than expected.

How much do you charge for renting my home for film shoots or photo shoots?

To determine the price you will charge for the rental of your space for a shoot, the space itself and the duration of the shoot are taken into account, as you don’t charge the same for a 60m2 apartment as you would for a 300m2 villa. It all depends on the space.
The rental fee is not the same whether the rental is for one, two or six days.

In addition, to determine the rental price of your space we also take into account the volume of people or technical equipment that will go to the shooting. In film and series shootings, it is very common that the technical team exceeds 20 people. To this we must add the actors, which usually can be between 2 and 5 people.

Finally we also take into account whether the shooting will occupy the entire location or only part of it, because it is not the same if the shooting set is in the garden of your house or all over your house.

With all these data, you will see that it is difficult to say an exact price of what you can earn renting your house for filming, but to give you an approximate idea, for a small apartment can be charged between €600 and €1,000 per day of shooting. If the space is larger, prices go up to €3,000 per day.

For photo shoots, prices are usually lower, as there are two important factors to take into account in this type of work. The first factor is the technical team, which is usually not as numerous as in film and series shoots. In the case of photo shoots, the technical team is usually composed of between 3 and 5 people, then there are the actors or models, in total there are usually no more than 8 people per photo shoot.

At Rep Locations we take care of negotiating all aspects of the shoot with the production companies to generate the minimum inconvenience and the price we get for renting your space during the negotiation process with them will be entirely for you, as we charge an agency fee to the production companies for offering them our service, but we do not charge anything to the owners.

Do I have to leave my home during the shoot?

Sometimes, film and television series shootings require the entire location for filming, in these cases it is usually included in the agreement and rental contract, a hotel so that the owners can leave their home comfortably and thus generate less inconvenience during the filming process. On other occasions only certain rooms or areas of the property are required. In these cases the owner can be at home if he/she prefers.

Owners are usually allowed to stay during filming, as long as they do not interfere with the filming work.

Is it safe to rent my property for film shoots?

All filming is usually covered by insurance, which is contracted by the production company in charge of the filming work. However, we always recommend that the owners have or take out additional risk prevention insurance.

On the other hand, it is important to emphasize that Rep Localizacines S.L. only works with professionals in the sector and the locations we manage are offered mainly for film shoots, TV series, commercials and photo shoots.
These jobs are usually very professional and normally no major damage occurs during the shooting, although of course, small incidents can always happen, so it is essential to have the relevant insurance or insurances.

As the rental contract is made directly between the owner and the filming company, it is of vital importance that you make sure to include in it a section related to insurance and damages. From Rep we will advise you so that the contract is safe for you.
As for the payment, it is usual that you get paid before the filming crew starts shooting, so you will not have problems with the collection of your rent.

What types of locations are most in demand?

Just a fact, during the year 2021 more than 88 feature films, 119 short films and 51 fiction series, more than 400 commercials and 250 television projects were shot in Spain. The demand for locations and spaces for filming is growing every day.

Streaming video platforms, such as Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV, Filmin or HBO are partly responsible for this demand, well and of course, the viewers, who are the ones who demand this content.
These platforms are also producers of their content, which need to shoot series, movies and documentaries every month.
This generates an important volume of work for us, the location agencies, and of course, a demand for spaces such as your village house, or that other grandparents’ apartment, full of old furniture that nobody wants … Well, someone needs it! don’t forget it, because in every project that comes to us the demand is very varied, from a reception of an office, a boardroom or despaho, a humble apartment, or one of the 80’s, or also luxury villas, with swimming pool and a large garden, rustic farms, rural houses, workshops and factories full of machines. We are also asked for terraces, penthouses with views, commercial premises, both in activity and closed, storage rooms, portals, community of neighbors or apartments on the beach.
As you will see the spectrum is very wide, and there is room for everything, so if you have a property that seems peculiar for some reason, maybe it is the location we are looking for the next shooting.

How do you get your home selected for a shoot?

As everything in life, a picture is worth a thousand words. Therefore, the first thing you need for your property to be selected for a shoot is to have very good photographs of the location. We strongly recommend you to hire a professional photographer for this task, because for little money you will have photos suitable for publication. If you can’t find a photographer in your area, Rep Locations can recommend photographers in your area.
As for the number of photos, it is normal to have a photo album of between 10 to 60 photos.

On the other hand, it is also important that when you register your property on our website, you have prepared a good descriptive text, where you explain each area of the house, with the most important details.

With all this you will have your space ready to compete with the rest of the properties and the chances of your house or property being chosen for a shooting will increase.

Finally, if you want your house to have more visibility within our website, you can hire a Premium visibility service, which will show your property prominently on our website and will also be offered by email to all our customers.

How does the location selection process work?

The phases of the selection and filming process are as follows:

1. Registration of your property

Create an owner account and register your property on our website, here you can do it.

2. Options Process

Once you register your property, it will be published on our website, and will also be offered to our clients as a shooting option when we determine that your property is suitable for the project. All with the maximum discretion about your personal data or the exact location of your property.
We call this process of sending locations for a first selection, the Options process.

3. Selection Process

After selecting or receiving the initial options, our client usually makes a selection with a small number of options, of which they usually select 2 or 3 per location. We call this process the Selection Process.

This is where we will contact you to confirm availability and pricing. With this information we will make a firm quotation to our client, where we will indicate the rental rate for the location and our fee for the management that we will do until the closing of the production. Both amounts will be indicated separately. During this process, your agent will agree with you an artistic visit in order to evaluate “on-site” if it really adapts to the client’s expectations.

4. Artistic visit

Before closing the rental contract it is usual that the artistic team wants to see the location in situ. This involves a physical visit to the location by the production company’s art team.

5. Technical Visit

Once the location is Ok by the Art team, a technical visit is usually necessary, where the technical staff evaluates the space and the technical needs it may require for the shooting.

6. Contract Signing

Once everything is previously agreed upon, the rental contract is drawn up between the property and the production company. Rep is in charge of advising you in this process, so that the contract has all the necessary clauses so that the contract is balanced and satisfactory for both parties.

7. Billing and collection

Prior to the start of filming, the owner must issue an invoice to the production company in charge of filming and collect payment for the same.

8. Filming

And then came the day of the shoot.

What happens when my house has been selected for filming?

Once you have committed to renting your home or space for a filming, it is important that you reserve those dates and maintain the availability of the space until the closing of the Selection Process. That is when we will be able to confirm if your property has been selected or not.
Once your space has been confirmed as a filming location you will have to sign a contract and wait for the day of the shoot to arrive.

What happens in my house during the shooting?

Before a shoot, try to leave everything prepared and as tidy as possible. Remove delicate items and be patient, as you will see that the activity is frenetic, because in a shooting everything is very tight in time, to meet the requirements of the shooting script. For the rest, don’t worry too much.

Usually the technical crew will arrive first, as they have to prepare the set for filming. They may have to move certain furniture to adjust the set to what they are looking for. Other times they will remove everything and set up the set themselves with other furniture. In these cases all this is planned and agreed with the owner, so you have little to worry about.

Then the shooting begins, where they usually need silence and the least number of people present on the set.

Is renting my home for filming a good way to earn income?

We have owners who earn an average of 6,000€ per year renting their house, apartment, loft, office, commercial space or property for film shoots. It is definitely a not inconsiderable source of income that should be taken into account if you are looking for extra income.
