Great stories need spaces capable of moving even before the characters speak. In La Bola Negra, the new film by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo inspired by the universe of Federico García Lorca, locations become an essential part of the narrative: places full of memory, beauty and truth.

The film travels between different eras and emotions, and to build such a personal and cinematographic atmosphere, the production relies on real spaces with a soul of their own. Classic homes, interiors with history and houses full of personality help to create an intimate and deeply human visual universe, impossible to reproduce artificially on a set.

More and more films, series and advertising campaigns are looking for just that: authentic locations that add identity, texture and credibility to the image. Because in film, spaces not only accompany the story… they also tell it.

Los Javis take Lorca’s universe to Cannes

La Bola Negra is the new film directed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, inspired by the unfinished play of the same name by Federico García Lorca and La piedra oscura, the renowned play by Alberto Conejero. The project was born from just four pages written by Lorca before his assassination in 1936, a fragmentary material full of symbolism that Los Javis transform into a deeply emotional story about memory, desire and identity.

The title itself refers to an ancient social practice whereby a young homosexual was refused entry into certain private circles by using a “black ball,” a symbol of exclusion that connects directly to some of the central themes of the film.

The story takes place in three different periods – 1932, 1937 and 2017 – and intertwines the lives of three men marked by love, loss and the passage of time. The film combines historical drama and contemporary storytelling, building a carefully crafted visual universe where spaces and locations carry enormous narrative weight.

The cast is headed by Guitarricadelafuente, who makes his film debut in one of the leading roles, along with Carlos González and Miguel Bernardeau. In addition, the film features international names and some of the most prominent figures in Spanish cinema such as Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close, Lola Dueñas, Antonio de la Torre, Natalia de Molina and Albert Pla.

It is produced by LOS ESQUIADORES A.I.E., Suma Content Films, El Deseo, Atresmedia, Le Pacte and Movistar Plus+, consolidating its position as one of the most ambitious Spanish film projects of recent years.

Filming took place in different locations in Spain, including Granada, Sigüenza, Comillas and small historical towns that help recreate different eras and atmospheres within the film. Many of these locations were chosen precisely for their ability to preserve the imprint of time and convey visual authenticity.

After its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival 2026, La Bola Negra received an international standing ovation and Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo won the award for Best Director, making the film one of the most anticipated and talked-about Spanish productions of the year.
